Instead,
it proposes the investigation of 700 hectares. If a review of logging
in Goolengook is to proceed, it should investigate the full
area proposed for protection.
Logging
within these areas would cause habitat fragmentation and drastically
reduce the ability of threatened species found in the area to persist.
We are
also concerned that if some areas of Goolengook are protected, the
Government would make another area of ancient forest available for
logging to compensate the logging industry. The Government has the
power under the National Parks Act to set aside areas with such
outstanding natural values as Goolengook, so there is no excuse
for such a trade-off.
We reiterate
the call by over 25 organisations for the Government to initiate
an inquiry into the proposed integration of Goolengooks forest
into the Errinundra National Park.
If the
Government cant get it right with Goolengook, what hope have
we for the rest of East Gippslands ancient forests?
